PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY AND APPROACH
About Us
The Art of Phlebotomy offers a comprehensive, flexible training program designed to prepare
students to become skilled, knowledgeable, and certified phlebotomists. The training focuses on a
balanced blend of knowledge, technique, and compassion, combining self-paced theory with
rigorous, supervised hands-on practice.

Core Theoretical Training Modules
Students build a precise foundation in clinical healthcare standards through four primary educational domains:
Proper Medical Terminology
Example 1: Common blood-related prefixes and suffixes (e.g., hem- or hemat- meaning blood, and -ology meaning the study of).
Example 2: Anatomical directional terms and abbreviations commonly used in lab orders and patient charts (e.g., venipuncture, antecubital, CBC).
Safety and Infection
Control Protocols
Example 1: Proper Hand Hygiene and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) usage, such as the correct sequence for donning and safely removing gloves, masks, and gowns.
Example 2: Needle-stick safety and Sharps Disposal compliance, including the mandatory use of engineered safety devices and never recapping contaminated needles.
Anatomy (Circulatory & Vascular System)
Example 1: Identification of the primary veins in the antecubital fossa used for venipuncture (e.g.,
Median Cubital, Cephalic, and Basilic veins).
Example 2: Understanding blood vessel structure and differences, specifically the walls and functions
of veins versus arteries.
Specimen Collection Procedures
Example 1: Order of Draw guidelines, detailing the precise sequence in which evacuated blood collection tubes (e.g., Light Blue, Red, Lavender) must be filled to prevent cross-contamination of
additives.
Example 2: Proper site preparation and skin antisepsis, such as cleaning the venipuncture site with an alcohol pad in a concentric circle and allowing it to air-dry completely before insertion.
Hands-On Practice & Clinical Readiness
The program incorporates extensive practice opportunities to ensure students develop confidence and
competency in blood draw techniques before entering the field:

1
Simulated Venipuncture on Training Manikins & Arms
Students utilize realistic anatomical simulation arms and training manikins to repeatedly practice palpating veins, anchoring the skin, and inserting needles at the correct angle without any patient risk.
2
Competency Check-offs and Peer-to-Peer Practice
Under the direct supervision of experienced instructors, students participate in structured laboratory sessions where they practice equipment assembly, tube handling, and specimen labeling, performing simulated or supervised draws to achieve clinical competency.
Included Training Materials & Gear
As part of the enrollment and training package, students are fully equipped with professional tools for success, including medical uniform scrubs and a professional stethoscope.
